WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS, AUSTRALIA

#TRAVELTHURSDAY

This all-year round sub-tropical destination located on the East Coast of Australia made me wish that I could stay there forever. Probably the prettiest beaches I've ever been on.

In the heart of the Great Barrier Reef lies 74 beautiful islands, most uninhabited, that have some of the prettiest beaches in the world. The most popular one is Whitehaven Beach, with its crystal white silica sand stretching for seven kilometers along the turquoise coloured waters. Unlike regular sand, the sand on Whitehaven Beach does not retain heat making it comfortable to walk barefoot on a hot day. Also known as one of the finest sand beaches, you can even shine your jewelry with it. Hike to the top of the Hill Inlet at its northern edge to get a view of this stunning beach from above. On low tide, the beach expands and displays beautiful curves of the sand and water.

There are plenty of ways to explore these islands from day tours, multiple day boat cruises, to staying at one of the luxury resorts. With large swells surrounding the islands, it makes it ideal for sailing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving and relaxing on the secluded beaches and bays. The Great Barrier Reef, being one of the Seven Natural Wonders Of The World, is the largest and longest coral reef system, so snorkeling and diving is an extraordinary experience to do. With an airport located on one of their inhabited islands, Hamilton Island, you can even fly directly there from Brisbane, Sydney, Cairns, or Melbourne. Or take a boat or helicopter from the closest mainland town, Airlie Beach.

Airlie Beach, known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, has a population of just over 1,000 people. With streets filled with restaurants, bars, and shops, this town is made for tourists. If your looking to go for a swim or soak up the sun, check our the Airlie Beach Lagoon, a free, self-chlorinating lagoon with three different pools, or Boathaven Beach. Don’t forget to check out their markets every Saturday morning to get produce, art, craft, jewelry, and souvenirs all made by the locals.
